Quartz is a man-made stone that is many times harder than natural stone, making it almost scratch and stain resistant.  In fact the only minerals that actually beat quartz in terms of scratch-resistance are diamond, sapphire, and of course topaz.  It is a engineered stone designed to replicate the features of authentic granite.  It is available in a variety of colors, styles, and even patterns.  Quartz is a uniform color unlike granite countertops and its diverse variations.
